Dipanker Roy Choudhury is a well known Indian Slide Guitarist . He has started his musical training at a very young age. He belongs to Imdad khani Gharana (School of Music) which is represented by famous North Indian masters, such as Ustad Shujat Khan, Ustad Shahid Parwez. . Initially his teacher was his cousin Shr. Chand Mukherjee, later on he started learning from Lt. Pt. Rajesh Moyitra a well-known Sarod player from Varanasi. He has got soul, warmth, melody and depth in his voice, which he inherited from his father Shr. Promoth S. Roy Choudhury.His sonorous voice and inimitable style is reflected in his performance. A perfect example of expertise ambition and determination, he is a perfectionist who never compromises on his efforts.
After the initial training his hard work was rewarded when Sitar Maestro Ustad Shujaat Khan, the great grand son of Ustad Imdad Khan and son of Legendary Sitar player Ustad Vilayet Khan, accepted him as his student. Although Imdad Khani Gharana is dominated by Sitar and Surbahar player, Roy is the only Slide Guitarist who represents this gharana. Now he is one of the ardent disciple of this Gharana.
Roy has perform regularly in Radio and Doordarshan. He has performed innumerable shows and has been associated with various prestigious events such as “World Music Festival” in Moscow, Russia 2004 and “World Food Festival” in Vietnam, 2010. He has achieved several awards from “Sahitya Kala Parishad” and “Ministry of Culture”. He is the core member of the internationally acclaimed fusion band “Impulse”.He has been honoured by “Sangit Sadhak” Upadhi by Gandhi Sahitya Sabha, Raj Ghat, New Delhi .He has written a book on “Guitar and its playing technique” which is published by Reed Worthy Publication. He is also AIR grade artist.
Behind these layers the other side, Roy also conducts Music Healing session named as NIRVANA, workshops for Indian classical music, compose songs and orchestra for school, NGO's and other government and private sectors. He has been honored with “Shikshak Shree” 2012. He has a dream of opening a chain of Indian Slide Guitar Schools to give this instrument a better platform in the world. Following his dream he has opened “SHREE a tradition...”(Music and Art Studio) to enrich the talent of music devotees.
